10 Things To Get Ready To Build Your Online Course

These days, as more and more people rely on online learning, the need to make learning content available on the web becomes imperative. And it is not just about pushing the content out there. Much thought and effort have to go into planning, designing and producing learning content so that they aptly support the learning process and objectives.

One cannot just open up a course builder site and start to build an online course.  At the most basic, there are 10 things that one needs to have ready before starting to build an online course.  These things are required to fill up mainly 3 parts of a COURSE :

Here are 10 things that you need to get ready before embarking on effort to build a course.

1. Course Details or Course Outline

In less than 300 words, share what the course is all about. You can consider outlining the following aspects to get people to know what the course entails :

  • What learners / students can expect to gain after the course?
  • What is the approximate course duration?
  • What are the subject matters covered within the course?
  • Skills and abilities or what students/learners will be able to do after the course?
  • How can the students/learners expect in terms of communication with the instructors/tutors/teacher during the course?
  • Will there be any credits/certificates/badges issued to learners/students at the end of the course?
  • Are there any course prerequisites that needs to be fulfilled before taking this course? (eg. taking another basic course or introduction course before embarking on an advance course)

2. Course Short Description / Summary

Sometimes – like in Loolla Learning Network – there is an option for you to provide an even shorter version of the course write up, usually less than 100 words. If so, the short write up should focus on the following:

  • What learners / students can expect to gain after the course?
  • What is the approximate course duration?
  • Skills and abilities or what students/learners can do after the course?

3. Course Cover Page Image(s)

Get ready 2 images that best represent your course.

5. Lesson, Topic, Quiz & Assignment
LESSON, TOPIC, QUIZ and ASSIGNMENT are the core contents of a course. You’ve got to have the learning materials and resources ready before you can create any LESSON, TOPIC, QUIZ and ASSIGNMENT. This mean, you need to have the following ready :

  • Text write up (ie. articles, questions, etc)
  • Video files or links
  • Audio files or links
  • Images

When you create a LESSON, you can enter text, add videos, add audio files and images that make up a proper LESSON.  If a LESSON contains lots of content or contents that cover different aspects,  we suggest you create TOPICS within your LESSON.

is a sub-category within a LESSON.  Similarly, you can add text, videos, audio files and images within a TOPIC.  You can have as many TOPICS as you like under each LESSON.  However, if your LESSON content is not much, you can just add text, videos, audio files and images within the LESSON itself, without the need to create any TOPIC

To test how well a student / learner understand the LESSON and TOPIC, you can create a QUIZ for every LESSON. This means at the end of the LESSON – and after going through the TOPIC(s), if any – the student / learner can take a QUIZ.  There are many forms of questions for a QUIZ.  In Loolla, you can choose from any of the follow forms of questions:

  • Select One Answer (i.e. Multiple Choice Question)
  • Select More Than One Answer (i.e. Multiple Choice Question, but with more than 1 answer)
  • Type A Word or Phrase
  • Sort In The Right Order
  • Match Items Correctly (eg. match text with pictures or match pictures with pictures)
  • Fill In The Blanks
  • Give Your Rating / Fill In Survey Form (eg. from a scale of 1 to 5)
  • Essay / Open-Ended Question (Type In or Upload Answer Document)

(Note : You can also create a FINAL QUIZ at the end of the COURSE.  This means that students / learners can take the FINAL QUIZ before they complete the COURSE.)

Besides QUIZ, you can also allow students / learners to upload ASSIGNMENT after they complete a specific TOPIC or LESSON.   In Loolla, you can activate this feature when your are editing a LESSON or TOPIC. You just head to SETTINGS tab within the specific LESSON or TOPIC.

In Loolla, you can easily RESUSE a LESSON, TOPIC or QUIZ. This means that if a LESSON, QUIZ, TOPIC you have created is suitable for another COURSE, you can REUSE them.
